Opening Reception: Friday, November 7, 2008, 6pm - 9pm

Curator's Talk: Wednesday, November 19th 6-8pm (FOTOWEEK EVENT)

IA&A's Hillyer Art Space and Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) in conjunction with FotoWeek DC are proud to present Known Unknowns, a group photography exhibition curated by Amanda Maddox, Assistant Curator of Photography and Media at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

Featuring Photographs By:

Avi Gupta, Kate MacDonnell, Sandra Rottman and Christopher Saah

The camera has a history of being utilized as an "instrument of evidence," seen perhaps most directly when used to create mug shots, identify anthropological information through portraiture, and gather data in other forms. This presupposes that a photograph serves as proof of something having existed, even though no such guarantee can be assumed.

Taking its title from Rumsfeld's phrase "known unknowns," this exhibition considers how the medium itself indicates that photographic representations cannot stand as forms of verification. It brings together four local artists - Avi Gupta, Kate MacDonnell, Sandra Rottmann, and Christopher Saah - whose work explores some of the complications and contradictions involved in treating photography as evidence.
